WST presents at Feflow International User Conference 2018

Water Services and Technologies participated in the Feflow International User Conference 2018, which was held in Denver, CO, from December 3rd to 6th, presenting the work “Assessing the Importance of Modeling Karst Conduit Flows into an Underground Mine: a Case Study in Brazil ”, Which illustrates how a numerical model can be used over the years to make decisions in underground mines.

The case presented was that of the Vazante Zinc Mine, belonging to NEXA Resources, where the geologists and engineers of Water Services and Technologies have been working on different projects since 2007. The groundwater flow model, developed in FEFLOW, has been regularly updated, which allows NEXA technicians to design flow rates to be drained from the mine, the evolution of the lowering cone, the design of new pumping facilities and mitigating measures.

This work, in particular, demonstrated the importance of considering karst features in the flow model. The result of the work was recently published in the Hydrogeology Journal (Ninanya, Guiguer et al. 2018)
