Course: Planning, Execution, and Interpretation of Hydrogeological Tests using AquiferTest

A fundamental part of hydrogeological assessments involves determining the hydrodynamic properties of aquifers. To achieve this, it is necessary to plan, execute, and interpret pumping tests, which can be used both for aquifer characterization and for determining the optimal flow rate and evaluating the operational efficiency of production wells.

Pumping tests for aquifer characterization involve pumping a well for a predetermined period and measuring the drawdown rate over time in one or more observation wells. The results are interpreted using well-known analytical solutions, such as Theis, Hantush, and Neuman, among others.

In this online course spanning three mornings (12 hours), we will cover both the practical aspects that must be considered for the successful execution of pumping tests and the application of analytical solutions to interpret their results.

During the training, we will use the AquiferTest software, an excellent tool to assist in interpreting and visualizing test results, whether for defining aquifer parameters or evaluating well efficiency.

REQUIREMENTS

✔ Participants are expected to have a basic prior understanding of hydrogeology concepts.

Installation of the AquiferTest software (instructions will be provided before the course begins, along with a temporary training license).

✔ Participants must use their own laptops to complete the exercises, meeting the following minimum system requirements:

Processor: 64-bit
Hard Drive: 250MB of free space to run a model
RAM: 8GB or more (recommended)

Instructor

Mauro Prado, M.Sc.

Geologist graduated from the University of São Paulo, with a master’s degree in Environmental Sciences from the University of East Anglia, England. He specializes in hydrogeology, water supply, water resource management, and numerical modeling of groundwater flow and contaminant transport. His areas of expertise include hydrogeology applied to mining projects, regional assessments of groundwater resources, water resource exploration, project management, and contaminated site characterization. Other areas of expertise and interest include the drilling and completion of tubular wells and wells for salt dissolution, aquifer protection, and hydrogeological aspects related to oil and gas production. Mauro is an instructor in the mathematical modeling and aquifer test interpretation courses offered by Water Services and Technologies.
