WST PFAS Webinar Series: Using Visual PFAS™ to Evaluate Vadose Zone Sources

Characterization of PFAS sources in vadose zones requires analysis of soil concentrations in plan view and cross-sections, as well as potential lysimeter results for evaluating PFAS mass discharge to underlying aquifers. This webinar presents an AFFF-impacted site case study which shows how radial diagrams and stacked bar maps provide important tools for characterizing PFAS vadose zone sources, including:

  • Review of PFAS transport mechanisms in vadose zones, and typical soil and lysimeter studies for characterizing shallow PFAS source zones
  • Case study demonstration of how specialized radial diagram and stacked bar maps may be used to evaluate relative PFAS depths of impact and mass discharge rates in shallow and deep portions of the vadose zone
  • Benefits of using lysimeters to characterize the influence of a vadose zone source to an underlying aquifer

Approaches for using Visual PFASTM to evaluate soil samples in plan view or cross-section, as well as lysimeter monitoring results, are illustrated in a hands-on demonstration with an example site.

Grant Carey, Ph.D.

Dr. Grant Carey is President of Porewater Solutions with more than 30 years of experience specializing in the characterization, modeling, and remediation of many impacted sites across North America. Grant also specializes in the development of innovative modeling and visualization tools for conducting PFAS forensic assessments and for evaluating long-term remediation strategies. Grant is currently involved with five SERDP-ESTCP projects where his main research focus is on PFAS transport and remediation. Grant is also an Adjunct Research Professor at Carleton University in Ottawa, Ontario.
