Hydrogeological modeling is essential for understanding subsurface flows, assessing environmental impacts, and planning water use. This course offers comprehensive training, combining theory and practice, so you can build accurate models using Visual MODFLOW Flex.

Throughout this course, participants will be guided through the entire modeling process, from conceptual model construction to result analysis and scenario simulations. Through a combination of theory and practice, participants will develop essential skills for creating and calibrating three-dimensional groundwater flow and contaminant transport models, using the finite difference methodology.

TARGET AUDIENCE

The course is designed for hydrologists, geologists, hydrogeologists, environmental scientists, environmental consultants, state or federal regulators, managers, and decision-makers who deal with groundwater well monitoring and wish to specialize, update, and/or enhance their knowledge in aquifer test planning and interpretation. Participants from universities and research centers are also welcome.


MODE OF DELIVERY

Virtual: The course will cover theoretical content, exercises, and practical case studies related to pumping test results.


REQUIREMENTS

✔ Participants are expected to have a basic understanding of hydrogeology concepts.

Installation of the Visual MODFLOW Flex software (instructions will be provided before the course begins, along with a temporary training license).

✔ Participants must use their own laptops to complete the exercises, meeting the following minimum system requirements:

Operating System: Windows 10 or Windows 11 (Pro, Enterprise, or Ultimate)
Processor: 64-bit
Hard Drive: 2.0 GB of free space, plus additional space for models
RAM: 8GB or more (recommended)
Software Requirements: Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5
Regional Settings: English symbols
Internet connection required

NOTE: Administrator permission may be required.

Recommendation: Using an additional screen is advised for a better learning experience and to facilitate practical exercises.

Instructor

Mauro Prado

Mauro Prado, M.Sc.

Geologist graduated from the University of São Paulo, with a master’s degree in Environmental Sciences from the University of East Anglia, England. He specializes in hydrogeology, water supply, water resource management, and numerical modeling of groundwater flow and contaminant transport. His areas of expertise include hydrogeology applied to mining projects, regional assessments of groundwater resources, water resource exploration, project management, and contaminated site characterization. Other areas of expertise and interest include the drilling and completion of tubular wells and wells for salt dissolution, aquifer protection, and hydrogeological aspects related to oil and gas production. Mauro is an instructor in the mathematical modeling and aquifer test interpretation courses offered by Water Services and Technologies.
