Challenges
The mining operation involves the extraction of a polymetallic ore body, with two mines currently in operation and two additional mines projected to begin operations in 2027. This study was conducted to update and recalibrate the conceptual and numerical hydrogeological model for the mining project.
The goal was to update and calibrate the numerical hydrogeological model based on the refined geological model of the mine and to simulate different scenarios.
Solution
The project involved a review of the existing database, including hydrogeological and hydrological monitoring data, water level and flow data, climate data, mine dewatering data, as well as geological, hydrogeological, and geotechnical drilling data. The update of the conceptual hydrogeological model considered the verification of data from hydrogeological units, hydrodynamic parameters, aquifer recharge, potentiometry, and water balance in the area of interest. Following the conceptual model review, the numerical model was revised and recalibrated by adjusting the model’s input properties and boundary conditions to ensure the greatest possible accuracy with current hydrogeological conditions. Scenario simulations included mine dewatering projections based on current mining plans, as well as projections of drawdown caused by dewatering and potential impacts on adjacent surface water bodies.
Results
The numerical simulations predicted maximum inflow rates into the mines for the years 2030 and 2040, as outlined in the mining plan. The simulations suggest that mine drainage will not cause significant changes in the water table level across most of the project area, nor will it have major impacts on the surrounding environment. However, it is crucial to establish a systematic monitoring system for mine drainage to ensure continuous environmental protection.
